Willem Veidt was an unteroffizier of the German Army during World War I.[1]

History[]

Willem and his brother Henrik Veidt enlisted in the Great War. At some point, they were granted compassionate leave in the wake of their father's passing.[1] Sometime in 1915, the brothers were called back to fight in Belgium under Oberlutnant Eric Murnau. Murnau's advocacy for chemical warfare conflicted with Willem's code of honor; Willem citing its use would constitute a violation of The Hague Convention. Willem expressed his instant opposition, to which Murnau told Willem he would consider the suggestion before having him and Henrik assigned to inquiry at the Germans' Hill 60 encampment, to investigate the reports of "shadows walking at night" by the German troops.

That evening, Willem rebuked Murnau's ruthless stratagem as a disgrace to their country's honor and patriotism, although Henrik told his brother that he was afraid of dying, Willem remarked that having morals quelled his fear. Just then, Henrik witnessed an army of shadows led by John Locke enter from the trees. While the shadows butchered everyone at the camp, Willem was ambushed by John and stabbed with the Matchstick Key, reducing Willem to ash as he tried desperately reaching for Henrik.[1]

After the slaughter, Murnau returned Willem's recovered scarf to Henrik in an offer to Henrik to fight at the Battle of Ypres. Henrik wore the scarf around his arm in memory of his brother.[1]
