That's my choice. I want to live a normal life. You're still my brother, that's not going to change.

–Tyler to Bode and Kinsey.

Tyler Locke is one of the three main protagonists of Netflix Locke & Key. Struggling from the guilt of a strained relationship with his father, he is initially skeptical when his brother introduces him to the mysterious keys he finds at their childhood home. He is eventually forced by the demon that killed his father to witness the power of the keys. As he approaches his eighteenth birthday, Tyler decides to forget the magic and leaves to find a normal life in Montana. However, he later returns to help his family against the demon possessing Frederick Gideon and chooses to have his memories restored by the Memory Key. Although Tyler returns to his new life in Montana after Gideon's death and the Lockes giving up the keys, he promises to remain in closer contact with his family rather than cutting them off as he did before. He is played by Connor Jessup.

Early History[]

Tyler bonded with Kinsey and eventually returned her toy to her.[1] A third child came into the family, named Bode.

The Well House Mystery[]

Experience with the Keys[]

Tyler has the toughest experience with the keys found throughout Keyhouse, and initially believes the whole ordeal is a story manufactured by his little brother Bode. Therefore, despite seeing the Mirror Key in action, he dismisses the whole thing as a hallucination and tells Bode and Kinsey to forget about the whole thing.[2]

He would later come around to the idea of magic and the keys when Bode shows him the inside of his head via the Head Key. Tyler is privy to one of Bode's memories of their father, and this marks the moment that Tyler begins believing everything his brother is saying; this also marks the moment Tyler begins to hear the whispers of the keys.[1] With the threat of Dodge looming over them, Tyler tells Bode and Kinsey that they should split the keys between them for protection.

Tyler uses Head Key Knowledge

Wanting to impress Jackie, Tyler later uses the Head Key to insert knowledge into his head about the war. However he finds that this is not one of Jackie's passions, and she instead prefers Jane Austen. The two talk about Jane Austen and Tyler eventually goes to the library to rent a book with the intent to also insert this into his head, however, is caught out by Jackie and decides to do things naturally with her.[3]

Duncan's memories

Duncan's memories reveal themselves

Whilst wondering through the cemetery, Tyler and Kinsey find the Plant Key, which reveals to them Duncan Locke's hidden memories. They watch the memories and find out that Rendell's childhood friends did not die by drowning in the caves like everyone suspects, but there was something more sinister at work.[4] It is later revealed by Ellie that the memories were taken from Duncan and hidden there when he witnessed them murdering Lucas, who was possessed by Dodge — a demon from the other side of the Black Door.[5]

Tyler and Echo flirting

Tyler meets Dodge at Javi's party.

Tyler and Kinsey later find the Omega Key hidden in their father's ashes, and hide it within the Mending Cabinet after using the cabinet to mend the broken urn. They would later use the key to throw Dodge — or so who they thought was Dodge — through the Black Door in the Drowning Cave. It is later revealed that they actually threw Ellie Whedon through the door without knowing.[6]

Struggling with Rendell's death[]

Tyler struggles with the concept of his father's death, however not because he is gone, but because he feels guilty, believing himself to have caused Rendell's death. A flashback shows that Rendell had asked Tyler to get close to Sam in order to report back to him on his mental health. On one occasion, when the two are both at school, Tyler jokingly asks Sam to kill Rendell too if he ever kills his own father. Tyler believes this to be the reason that Sam killed his father, therefore carries around large amounts of guilt for the next six months.

Later when Sam attacks the Lockes again, Sam reveals that the whole ordeal was in his seeking of the Head Key. This relieves Tyler, who questions Sam to confirm his reason for killing Rendell and if it has anything to do with what he said to him; Sam confirms that this is not the case, given he killed Rendell for Dodge.[7]

Troubles with Jackie[]

After revealing to all of his friends about the existence of the keys, Tyler spends the summer with Jackie Veda and the two start dating. Tyler tries to convince her to try new experiences with him during the summer but finds Jackie reluctant as she does not want to miss out on school or fail any classes. As a result of this, Tyler uses the Head Key to insert all of the knowledge from the reading into her head.

Troubles arise, however, when it becomes clear that Jackie cannot remember the readings put inside of her head by Tyler, and it quickly becomes clear that Jackie is forgetting magic as she approaches her eighteenth birthday. Tyler worries that their experiences are going to come to an end as the memories fade and their two worlds drift further and further apart. During this time, Tyler is forced to reintroduce the keys to Jackie numerous times, including using the Anywhere Key to take her to Bath.

Jackie's memories become weaker and weaker until they eventually fade once more. During a celebration one night, Tyler takes Jackie to one side and shows her the effects of the Matchstick Key. Tyler questions if Jackie would want to retain her memories of magic if this were possible, but Jackie is cautious and questions the nature of magic. When Tyler explains that magic can be both good or bad, Jackie remarks that she doesn't want to be stuck with this knowledge forever, and therefore declines the use of the Memory Key. Tyler is distraught, but finds solace in the video blog the two made together of their times using the keys.

Forging new keys[]

Tyler Alpha Key 209

Tyler forging the Alpha key in the hopes of saving Jackie.

After losing his girlfriend, Jackie, to Dodge — who turns her into a demon using the Demon Key — Tyler requests the help of his uncle, Duncan to forge a new key that would return her (and the others) to their former selves. Tyler is successful under the guidance of Duncan in forging a new key, the Alpha Key, which would kill demons and return their hosts back to their former selves.

In a showdown between Jackie and Tyler, the former is stabbed in the back with the key killing the demon instantly. Tyler is ecstatic at the return of Jackie, but things turn sour quickly and Jackie dies as a result of the keys use; Tyler is horrified as he witnesses the death and liquid metal drips from Jackie's eyes.[8][9]

With the anger of Jackie's loss behind him, Tyler teams up with the other Locke's and Scot to take down Dodge for good. In a showdown at Dodge's new headquarters, Tyler is successful in using the Alpha Key to eliminate numerous demons, including Detective Mutuku. Eventually, Tyler — with the distraction of Kinsey — is able to kill Dodge once and for all by stabbing her in the back of the head with the Alpha Key. To their amazement, the real Lucas Caravagio emerges from the wreckage, freed by Tyler's use of the Alpha Key on Dodge. Unlike Jackie and the other demon hosts, Lucas was able to survive the separation due to his being an Echo. Lucas returns the stolen keys that Dodge had on her when she died and the Lockes are reunited with Ellie Whedon who had escaped from the Black Door.[10]

New Start[]

A week later, Tyler prepares to depart on a road trip. He explains to Bode and Kinsey that due to the grief caused by magic, he has decided not to use the Memory Key and therefore, Tyler will forget the existence of magic as his eighteenth birthday approaches. He is gifted with Duncan's car that he restored to take with him on his travels. Just before departing, Tyler hands over all of the keys in his possession to Kinsey.[10]

Tyler subsequently moves to Montana and starts a new life as a construction worker away from his family with a new girlfriend named Carly. Now no longer having memories of the magic, Tyler remains distant from his mother and siblings, much to their sadness.[11]

Return to the Fold[]

Tyler eventually returns for Duncan's wedding where he gets drunk, causing his memories to return, much like had happened to Nina while she was drunk. However, the pain involved with the memories causes him to reject them. When Frederick Gideon, Samuel Coffey and James Bolton attack, Tyler drives them off with the Chain Key, but he quickly forgets the experience. In order to honor his wishes, Tyler's family keeps him in the dark about the growing threat from Gideon and his followers, although Tyler notices their strange behavior and recognizes that something is up to the point that he decides to stick around for awhile.[12][13][14]

With the encouragement of Carly, Tyler makes amends with Kinsey and asks her for the truth. Kinsey offers Tyler the option of using the Memory Key to regain all of his lost memories, but she warns him that they aren't all happy. Tyler decides to go through with it nevertheless and Kinsey uses the Memory Key on her brother, instantly restoring Tyler's memories of the magic and of what had happened to Jackie.[14]

Tyler's return to the fold comes just as Nina discovers Dodge's body under Bode's bed despite Tyler having killed the demon months earlier. Much to Tyler's surprise, Nina is now aware of the magic as she had Bode use the Memory Key on her after Bode had showed their mother the truth using the Head Key. Tyler and Kinsey quickly deduce that Dodge, who was accidentally transported through time by Bode with the Timeshift Key, is now possessing their brother and quickly subdue the demon with the Chain Key as she attacks Nina. As the Lockes drag Dodge to the Ghost Door to exorcise the demon and restore their brother, Dodge reveals the bigger threat of Gideon and that she is on their side against Gideon as Dodge doesn't want Gideon's plan to work anymore than they do. With Gideon laying siege to Keyhouse, the Lockes reluctantly release Dodge to help them, but the Timeshift Key's failsafe timer runs out before Dodge can kill Gideon with the Alpha Key, causing Dodge to vanish back to her own time and leaving Gideon with all of the keys. Worse, Bode's body is erased from existence, killing him and leaving Bode trapped as a Keyhouse ghost.[15]

Discovering that a key is missing, Gideon sends Bolton to force Tyler and Kinsey to lead him to it. Tyler and Kinsey plot to bring Bode back in Bolton's body, but Bode instead enacts a successful plan to possess the body of a sparrow and then using the Animal Key to resume his human form. Unable to defeat Gideon, Ellie agrees to lead him to the Creation Key in the head of Gordie Shaw. Much to everyone's shock, they are freed by Bolton whose body has now been taken over by Sam Lesser.[16]

A remorseful Sam apologizes for his actions and, with Sam having helped them in the past by leading Kinsey to the Angel Key, Tyler agrees to allow Sam to join them, pointing out that they need all of the help that they can get right now. While Bode and Nina stay behind to try to break into the Harlequin Chest, Tyler, Kinsey, Sam and Rufus go after Gideon and Ellie, discovering that they have entered Gordie's head after Gideon stabbed him. As Rufus tends to the injured Gordie, the other three enter his head in search of the Creation Key, eventually finding it in a piano. Sam stays behind to hold off Gideon as Tyler, Kinsey and Ellie escape from the dying Gordie's head. Much to Tyler and Kinsey's sorrow, Sam is stuck in Gordie's head when he dies, sacrificing himself to save them.[17][18]

With Gideon on their tail, Tyler and Kinsey flee back to Keyhouse where Bode and Nina have had no luck in opening the Harlequin Chest without the Harlequin Key which Gideon has. Instead, when Gideon arrives, Tyler lures him to the Wellhouse with the Creation Key and the Head Key where Bode uses an excavator to try to shove Gideon through the Wellhouse doorway in order to get rid of his Echo. However, Gideon breaks free and destroys the Wellhouse, preventing any effort to get rid of him that way. Instead, Kinsey manages to use the Creation Key to retrieve the Alpha Key from the chest. During a final struggle with Gideon, Kinsey stabs the demon in the heart with the Alpha Key and Tyler and Bode pull her to safety as Nina shoves the dying demon into his own portal which shrinks after his passing.[18]

Tyler quickly deduces that the portal had shrunk as Gideon had the Alpha and Harlequin Keys on him at the time of his death and tosses in the Head Key to test his theory, causing the portal to shrink even further. Tyler successfully argues that the family must give up the magic for good and throw the keys into the portal to seal it. Beforehand, however, the Lockes use the Timeshift Key to visit Rendell in the past and say a final goodbye to him. After Nina uses the Memory Key to ensure that Kinsey and Bode will retain their memories, the Lockes toss all of the keys into Gideon's portal.[18]

Tyler later attends the premiere of The Splattering II and has a somber look on his face as Kinsey explains why she had given Sam special thanks in the credits. Tyler decides to return to his new life in Montana, but he promises to remain in closer contact with his family this time. He also makes plans for a road trip with Carly.[18]

Personality[]

You're not their dad, but you're their brother, and you're a good one. Come on, you're strong, you're kind, and you have a good sense of who you are.

–Jackie praising Tyler.

Tyler is loyal to his family with his heart in the right place, and while he can be pessimistic and worry the worst is going to happen to everyone, he often has good reason for believing so. Still, he possesses the courage of his kin and does not hesitate to risk his well-being at any given time. He is compassionate as shown by his relationship with Sam and his horror at watching him die, all in spite of Sam's attempts on his life and murdering Rendell. Tyler is haunted by his father's death since he believes he was responsible, and the revelation that the events were his own father's actions only brings himself to question his father's intentions further.
