The Spider was an ordinary Black Widow Spider that was made enormous by the Dollhouse and the Small World Key. It was the main antagonist of Locke & Key: Small World.

Description[]

The Spider was black with red spots on its body, identifying it as a Black Widow, with eight red eyes. According to Joe Hill's first draft of the script, printed in the Deluxe Edition of Small World, the story's working title was "Locke & Key: Northern Widow", implying that the Spider's exact species is Latrodectus variolus, also known as the Northern Black Widow Spider or Northern Widow.

History[]

The spider made its web on the ceiling of the main living room[1] on the first floor of Keyhouse. The spider went unnoticed by the Locke Family as they were distracted by the new Dollhouse and Small World Key.

Later that night after dinner, Jean Locke activated the Dollhouse to pull a prank on her father by grabbing the bathtub while he was in it and pulling him down the stairs. Harland then called Jean to bed, but in her haste to get ready for bed she accidentally left the Dollhouse activated and also failed to notice the spider making its way into the Dollhouse.

When the spider entered the Dollhouse, the magic of the Small World Key caused it to manifest in as a giant spider in the real Keyhouse. The spider proceeded to hunt down the Locke Family one by one and cocooning them in its webs, most likely to eat later.

Ian Locke tried to use the Shadows to kill the spider, but he suffered a seizure caused by the tumor in his head and was captured. The spider then chased John, Mary, Jean and their pet cat, Tiberius, through Keyhouse as they tried to make their way to the Dollhouse to shut it off.

John wrapped his hand in a piece of torn tapestry and set it alight and punched the spider in the eyes before being captured. Mary then broke off a mop head and fashioned it into a crude spear and stabbed the spider in the mouth but got captured herself.

Only Jean and Tiberius remained. Jean then ran into the main living room to shut off the Dollhouse, but tripped on the rug and was cornered by the spider. At the last moment, Tiberius reached into the Dollhouse with his paw and squashed the spider, this caused a large paw to crash through the window of the real Keyhouse and squish the giant spider, killing it once and for all.[2]
