The Snow Globe is the first episode of the third season of Locke & Key. It aired on August 10, 2022.
Summary[]
A mysterious snow globe unleashes a double dose of trouble at Keyhouse, leaving Bode out in the cold as Kinsey and Nina try to retrieve a stolen key.
Plot[]
Demon-possessed sisters Dorothy and Ada Wheeler attempt to break out of the miniature snow globe that serves as their magical prison, but only manage to knock it off a shelf in the Keyhouse winter study. Nina Locke chances upon it and takes a special interest in it, oblivious to its true properties. The next day, Kinsey and Bode play with the Animal Key which allows them to change between human and animal forms, with Kinsey taking the form of a cat and Bode becoming a sparrow. The siblings store their keys in the Mending Cabinet. It is revealed that Nina has had the Memory Key used on her, allowing her to remember magic going forward as well as her past involvement with it.
The Lockes are busy preparing for Duncan's in-estate wedding to his fiancée Brian, and are conflicted about Tyler not responding to their attempts to reach out. Uncertain about whether he will attend the event, Kinsey suggests that Nina invite Josh Bennett instead. Ellie Whedon returns to Matheson at the insistence of her son Rufus, though she would rather begin anew elsewhere. She shares with Nina that Lucas Caravaggio's echo had set out on his own to make a fresh start. When asked about her time in the demon world, Ellie says it was a place where space and time were nonexistent, and that the experience was deeply unpleasant and unsettling.
Local performing arts maven Gordie Shaw hires the Savini Squad to revitalize Matheson's dwindling tourism industry in the wake of the recent tragedies through film. At the same time, the group is in the middle of filming the second instalment of The Splattering. Bode locates a key with a snowflake design when it whispers to him, and against their better judgment, he and Nina use it on the snow globe while Kinsey is out filming.
The estate transforms into a wintry landscape, and Bode rushes out to play in the snow. The Wheeler sisters appear and accost Nina, chasing her back into the house. Bode ends up trapped in the snow globe as he was outside Keyhouse when his mother removes the key. The sisters are able to take the key by force from Nina as she is not related to the Lockes by blood, and they flee the house.
Meanwhile, the echo of Captain Frederick Gideon and the demon possessing him devises a plan to reopen a portal to the demon world. The Wheeler sisters meet up with him and help him retrieve the Echo Key from Eden Hawkins' corpse at the bottom of the well in the Wellhouse, after which Gideon tasks them with collecting the other keys. Nina calls Kinsey for backup, and after searching the woods to no avail, they return to Keyhouse only to be ambushed by the Wheeler sisters, who are eventually thrown into the prison created by the Mirror Key, but not before Nina recovers the Snow Globe Key. Bode is rescued in the nick of time, and updates his written catalog to include the new key. Josh accepts Nina's invitation to Duncan's wedding.
In Montana, Tyler confides in his colleague at his construction job, Carly. He shares with her his reluctance to attend Duncan's wedding, and when asked to consider his reasons for leaving Matheson, it is implied that his inability to retain memories involving magic is causing him much confusion and uncertainty.
In the woods around Keyhouse, when Gideon holds the Anywhere and Echo Keys in the same hand, a small portal to the demon world appears in the ground before him. As the episode closes, he is seen smiling in triumph.
