The Small World Key, also known as the Dollhouse Key[1], is one of the Keys created by Harland Locke.
History[]
Harland Locke created the Small World Key and the Magical Dollhouse at the request of Chamberlin Locke as a birthday present for his two daughters: Jean Locke (whose 4th birthday was in a few days at the time) and Mary Locke (whom at the time had been 10 years old for almost two weeks).
Chamberlin intended the Dollhouse to be a teaching tool for Jean and Mary in order to teach then the duties and responsibilities that were expected of women at that time period.[2]
In 1915, Mary activated the Dollhouse and impaled a German soldier named Haacker with a pencil to save her brother John.[3]
Netflix Adaptation[]
Bode finds the Small World Key in a telescope of the parlor's desk. After testing several locks at Keyhouse with it, during a playdate, Bode shows the key to Jamie, and they discover the key fits into the dollhouse kept by her father, Josh Bennett. Bode and Jamie continue experimenting with the key; however, Nina then takes Bode home before he can take the key back with him. Jamie promises to keep the key and dollhouse safe, but before long, a spider enters the dollhouse unnoticed by her, and terrorizes the real Keyhouse. Bode calls Jamie, who kills the spider with a pencil, before removing the Small World Key.[4]
Later, as part of the Lockes' plan to defeat Dodge, Jamie reactivates the Dollhouse and traps Eden Hawkins inside a glass. Eden starts slamming against the glass as Jamie holds her grip to keep Eden contained. Just then, Josh enters the room and, believing Jamie was fooling around with the Dollhouse, he pulls Jamie away and takes the key out of the Dollhouse.[5]
Jamie later takes the key back and returns it to Bode at school.[6]
Uses[]
This key has the power to bend reality; when inserted into the Magical Dollhouse, it turns the dollhouse into a space-time replica of Keyhouse Manor. Everyone who is inside Keyhouse at the time all appears as moving dolls. Any interaction that happens to the Dollhouse happens to Keyhouse in real life, allowing the user to manipulate reality inside Keyhouse through the Dollhouse. If a small object is placed in the Dollhouse, a large counterpart of that object appears in the exact spot in the real Keyhouse, such as a spider entering the Dollhouse and manifesting in a massive form inside the actual Keyhouse.[2]
If the Dollhouse is in the real Keyhouse when activated it creates a Recursion effect.
