Past is Prologue is the fifth episode of the second season of Locke & Key. It aired on October 22, 2021.

Summary[]

Gabe insinuates himself into Tyler's search for the Memory Key as Kinsey resolves to find out what's going on with Eden. Bode visits an old friend.

Plot[]

Duncan Locke obsessively repairs his Pontiac GTO as his mental state worsens. Bode Locke receives a letter from Rufus Whedon, who is staying with his aunt and uncle in Nebraska after his mother's disappearance, and Bode later visits him using the Anywhere Key. Rufus believes Ellie is still alive somewhere, and reveals that he saw two Dodges the night Ellie disappeared.

Gabe visits Keyhouse with the aim of taking the music box to coerce Kinsey Locke into making a key for him, and is forced to come up with an excuse for being seen with Eden Hawkins, saying he was tutoring her in math. Kinsey and her brother reveal their plans to search Matheson Academy for the Memory Key, letting Gabe know that Duncan can forge keys in the process. He offers to help Tyler look for the key. When searching the school with Tyler and Logan Calloway, Gabe pauses at a picture of Lucas Caravaggio alongside the other Keepers of the Keys. Tyler eventually finds and unearths the Memory Key using the Hercules Key and belt.

Meanwhile, Nina Locke and Josh Bennett's relationship becomes physically intimate. She gifts him a ledger documenting the daily activities in Keyhouse when it was used as an intelligence base in the American Revolution. After she leaves, Josh discovers that a musket ball (actually a lump of Whispering Iron), passed down from his ancestor Captain Frederick Gideon, is missing.

Kinsey goes to a party to apologize to Scot Cavendish, but gets sidetracked by Eden before they can make peace. Eden corroborates Gabe's lie, but says she is being tutored in Spanish. A suspicious Kinsey waits for Eden to pass out, and uses the Head Key on her to confirm Gabe's infidelity. She finds evidence of Eden's mother being controlling, and notices dark tar covering part of her mind. Scot goes to check on her and enters Eden's head as well, and the two discover that Eden is a demon, and that Gabe is Dodge. Mannequins come to life in Eden's head to attack Kinsey and Scot, but the two use the Matchstick Key to escape.

At Keyhouse, Tyler uses the Memory Key to stabilize Duncan's condition, and he fully regains his memories of magic. Kinsey returns home and shares her findings with Tyler, Duncan, and Erin. The episode ends with the doorbell ringing, and Kinsey opening the door to find Gabe standing on the porch.
