The Owl Key is one of the Keys created by Harland Locke.
History[]
Kinsey defends her brothers from Merlin, using the Angel Key.
In the spring of 1915, Chamberlin Locke locked the Owl Key along with its automaton in the Vault of Shadows to prevent his son John Locke from using it to turn the tides of World War I.[1]
In 1988, when Mark Cho finds Ellie unconscious in the Wellhouse, he takes Merlin out of his backpack and sends it to find Rendell. When it brings him, Erin, and Kim back to the wellhouse, they find Mark dead. They go down to the Drowning Cave without Merlin.
When Ellie wakes up, she goes after them through the secret tunnel, bringing the owl with her. She makes Merlin snap the Shadow Crown off of Dodge's head, making the shadows holding the cave up disappear.[2]
Years later, Dodge uses the Owl to attack the kids on February 10.[3]

The key fits into the backside of a bronze owl named Merlin Clockworks that activates and will carry out the user's command.[2]
