The Moon Key is one of the Keys created by Harland Locke.

History[]

In 1912, a generation of the Locke family had a sick child, Ian, who could not be healed by the Mending Cabinet. Chamberlin Locke had Harland forge the key for the moon. The child is taken to the moon by balloon as though the world is a stage and passes gently to the next world.[1]

Sometime before October 1927, the key was hidden inside the Harlequin Wardrobe with the other keys. The Moon Key was among the many keys Mary Locke took for her quest in Hell. In the climax of the battle against the forces of Hell, Mary instructed Fiddler's Green to assume his botanical form, thus summoning a moon for the Moon Key to unlock. With it, Mary brings John's soul through it and frees him from his eternity in Hell. On the other side of the moon, Mary and John meet with the souls of Fiona Locke and Ian. John tearfully reunites with Fiona after over a decade apart and passes on, while Mary is escorted to the realm of the angels, the Silver City. Upon entering, the angels transport Mary back in time to pass the Key to Hell to Lucifer the moment he was cast into Hell, and send her back to Earth with Fiddler's Green after the task is done.[2]

Uses[]

This key allows the user to open the moon, as though the moon itself was a door. One can pass into the door taking them to a "backstage" of the world, referred to as "Chamberlin's Moon", and allows the user to pass into the afterlife gently.[1] This afterlife is connected with other realms and celestial bodies accessible to the user, including the Silver City and a place called the Gleaming.[2]

Guide to the Known Keys entry[]

Moon Key Excerpt

"There is nothing left to be done for little Ian. By the time the last fall apples are picked, his life will be wrenched from him in the most agonizing fashion, and no operation or final treatment will do anything to stop it from happening. Yet I think he hardly minds the pain that racks his nightly; nor has any great terror of death. My brave boy! What he cannot bear is his own knowledge of all the vistas he will ever see, all the people he will never meet, all the grand deeds he will never witness. It sickens my as well. I have asked Harland if he can fashion a key that can open a door in reality, a space between this life and next. I am imagining a kind of balcony, high above the humorous tragedies and sad comedies of this earth, a place beyond pain, where the dead may gather to enjoy the great show of life below."

Trivia[]

  • The Moon Key's bit is based on the symbol of the Triple Goddess figure, a triad of lunar goddesses who represent the phases of the moon, as well as the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
