The Mending Cabinet is a magical cabinet and the symbiotic other-half of the Mending Key. It was created by Benjamin Locke at the same time as the key.[1]

History[]

Graphic Novel[]

After its key was discovered by Bode in the bathroom, Nina figured the key unlocked the cabinet that was also in said bathroom. Later, Nina, in a drunken state, used the cabinet on several appliances before eventually putting Rendell's ashes in the cabinet with the intent of restoring Rendell. After leaving the room, she approached Tyler, believing it to be her husband, only to learn that the cabinet did not work on Rendell's urn. Nina became hysterical and threw the urn to the ground. While cleaning up the mess, Tyler and Kinsey uncover the Omega Key in Rendell's ashes.[2]

After being shot while defending Keyhouse, Tyler is placed in the cabinet by Nina. Inside, Tyler speaks to an apparition of Rendell that tells him "you can and can't save someone who has been infected", and that "keys turn both ways" before he sends Tyler back. Tyler then emerges from the cabinet completely healed.[3]

Netflix Series[]

The cabinet is first found by Nina in the basement when the Locke Family relocates to Keyhouse; she is unable to open the cabinet, however, as she is missing the Mending Key. Bode later finds the Mending Key in the sewing room of Keyhouse.

When Nina begins drinking again, she accidentally smashes the mug Rendell gifted to her. Attempting to hide the mug from her children, she hides the mug in the Mending Cabinet. When she opens the cabinet, she is shocked to find that it has returned to its previous state and is now fixed. She later tries to resurrect Rendell by placing his ashes in the cabinet, however, the cabinet does not work.[4]

Later, when Nina smashes the urn in anger — inadvertently revealing the location of the Omega Key — Tyler and Kinsey use the cabinet to restore the urn to its previous state.[5] They would later hide the Omega Key in the cabinet for safekeeping.[6]

Properties[]

The cabinet can only be opened with the Mending Key. When something is placed inside of the cabinet and the cabinet is locked with the key, the object inside will return to its previous state; this allows it to mend broken objects. The cabinet can also change its size, depending on the item placed inside.[2] The cabinet is unable to return deceased humans or animals back to life, however.[2][4]
