This article is about Locke & Key, the Netflix adaptation. You may be looking for Locke & Key, the original graphic novel series. Not to be confused with the 2011 Fox Pilot.

Locke & Key is an American drama web television series based on the comic book of the same name created by Joe Hill. The series premiered on Netflix on February 7, 2020. Its final season aired on August 10, 2022.[2][1]

The series had originally been ordered to pilot at Hulu, who eventually passed on it. Netflix later ordered it to series for ten episodes and redeveloped the show with new scripts and a new cast.

Premise[]

"After their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances, the three Locke siblings and their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which they discover is full of magical keys that may be connected to their father's death. As the Locke children explore the different keys and their unique powers, a mysterious demon awakens (known as the 'well lady' by the youngest sibling Bode Locke)— and will stop at nothing to steal them. The three kids try to make new friends in the town and alongside discover secrets of the key house their father left behind. From Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) and Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House), the series is a coming-of-age mystery about love, loss, and the unshakable bonds that define family."

Trivia[]

  • Locke & Key's rating was recently changed from TV-14 to TV-MA solely for "language". The third season contained more coarse language than previous, although it is unknown if this change was in response to second season.
    • Ironically, Locke & Key is allowed two "f-bombs" per season.[12]
  • The show has been praised for casting hitherto undiscovered actors/actresses who perform phenomenally, with only cast members such as Jackson Robert Scott, Griffin Gluck, Joy Tanner, Aaron Ashmore, and Kevin Durand already being well known beforehand. For instance, Emilia, Hallea, and Petrice Jones, Thomas Mitchell Barnett, and Laysla De Oliveira were names almost completely unknown to the public until Locke & Key caused them all to skyrocket on social media.
    • The show has also received praise from critics for its score and for its musical selections, causing virtually unknown songs to become discovered as well, such as Wasted Nun, Give You Up, Devil, Call Me, and Shrike, with only songs such as Time of the Season, Alors on Danse, You're Somebody Else and Crown already being well-known.
