The Harlequin Wardrobe is a wardrobe with a carving of a harlequin on the front.
History[]
The wardrobe and its key, the Harlequin Key, were created in the twentieth century by Chamberlin Locke to hide the family keys. He made it after protecting the keys with the Great Lock failed to keep his son, John Locke, from stealing them.[1][2] Prior to 1927, all the keys and their associated items were transferred into the wardrobe. In 1927, Mary Locke accessed the wardrobe to retrieve the Angel Key and wings, Moon Key, the Shadow Key and the Crown of Shadows, the Music Box and key, and the Sword Key, in preparation for her journey into Hell.[2]
In present day, Bode tried to activate the wardrobe with the Head Key and failed.[3] Bode discovers its key in February, and uses it to open the Harlequin Wardrobe where various keys are inside.[4]
Netflix Adaptation[]
In the series, the wardrobe is instead the Harlequin Chest. After creating several of the keys, Benjamin Locke creates the Harlequin Key to turn an ordinary Harlequin Chest into an impenetrable and indestructible hiding place for them. This is witnessed by Bode after he travels back in time using the Timeshift Key.[5]
For a long time, the chest resides in the Keyhouse basement without anyone realizing its significance. It is used to hold more mundane things such as clothes as a result.
While retrieving the Great Lock, Erin Voss uses the Harlequin Chest as a stepping stool.[6]
While searching for Whispering Iron to create a new key, Tyler Locke briefly searches through the Harlequin Chest before moving on.[7]
Following Frederick Gideon's attack aimed at stealing the keys from the Mending Cabinet, Bode locates the chest in the Keyhouse basement in the present and the Locke family use it to store all of their keys. Kinsey later retrieves the Memory Key from it in order to restore Tyler's memories of the magic, something that is witnessed by Dodge.[5][8][9]
When Gideon lays siege to the Keyhouse, the Lockes arm themselves and, reluctantly, Dodge with keys from the chest. However, Gideon forces the Lockes to lead him to the chest and gets all of the keys. Gideon uses the chest to hold the keys when he isn't using them, keeping the Harlequin Key in his possession so that the Lockes can't get at the other keys.[10][11]
While Gideon goes after the Creation Key, Bode and Nina attempt to break into the chest, but the electronic drill and saw they try with first break without even scratching it, and when they set it on fire next, it creates a small rain to extinguish the flames thus proving to be impenetrable to everything that they try, even teleporting itself back from the Wellhouse.[12]
Unable to get into the chest, the Lockes attempt to force Gideon through the door of the Wellhouse so as to destroy the Echo, but he breaks free and destroys the Wellhouse instead. Hit by inspiration, Kinsey uses the Creation Key to draw a door in the chest's lid, allowing her to bypass the magic on the chest and get the Alpha Key from inside. After killing Gideon with the Alpha Key and using the Timeshift Key one last time, the Lockes remove all of the keys from the Harlequin Chest and toss them into Gideon's portal in order to close it for good.[13]
Properties[]
When opened by an ordinary house key, it shows only old clothes and posters. When unlocked with the Harlequin Key, hidden items are revealed.[4]
In the Netflix series, the chest is impenetrable to physical damage.[5][12] The chest can also protect itself if one tries to destroy it, such as summoning rain if burned. The chest can return to the last place it was activated if the chest is moved from where it was last activated.[12] One can bypass its protection by using another key to create an opening.[12]
