Hans Riffel was a spy and the lover of Jean Locke.
History[]
Hans was the instituter of the Riffel Rule that causes adults to forget about the powers of the keys.[1] He wrote two entries in the Guide to the Known Keys: the Angel Key and the Hercules Key. From those entries, it is known that he was physically disabled, and initially a Nazi spy sent to infiltrate the Locke family in the hope of procuring their secrets for the Reich, but his and Jean's growing love caused him to turn against his superiors.[2]
Trivia[]
- Hans Riffel is named after Hannes Riffel, a German translator who assisted Joe Hill in the German writings in the Locke & Key series and on the German editions of some of his other books.[3][4] This also suggests that Hannes is the translator for the German entries for the Angel Key and Hercules Key in the Guide to the Known Keys.
- Ironically, the Riffel Rule was erroneously introduced as the "Hannes Riffel Rule" in Locke & Key: Clockworks #3.
