Five Minutes Past is the third episode of the third season of Locke & Key. It aired on August 10, 2022.

Summary[]

Bode looks for the key that will let him see his dad. Nina confronts bad memories, and Kinsey gathers with the Savinis for an emotional send off.

Plot[]

Bode Locke locates the Harlequin Key, allowing his family to better protect their magic items by moving them to the Harlequin chest. When he and Kinsey investigate evidence of someone forcing their way into the Wellhouse, the siblings argue about whether their mother is moving on from the loss of their father too quickly. Nina catches Bode going through her belongings, aiming to find and use the Timeshift Key to talk to Rendell. She uses the Head Key to show Bode memories with Rendell instead, but stops when she starts to see evidence of her past alcoholism. Bode misinterprets her actions and accuses her of wanting to forget Rendell.

Nina further explores her memory alone, reliving moments where she was emotionally absent for or even endangered her children because of her drinking. Kinsey stumbles upon her doing so, and warns her not to relapse. Nina eventually comes to terms with her past after reviewing her first steps to recover from her addiction as well as Rendell's support for her throughout the process.

Kinsey finds Eden Hawkins' corpse at the bottom of the well in the Wellhouse and enlists the Savini Squad's help to dispose of it. Drawing inspiration from the previous Keepers of the Keys, they toss the body over the cliffs near Keyhouse, but not before giving the Eden they knew a heartfelt musical sendoff. Ellie Whedon tries to apply for her old track team coach position at Matheson Academy, but leaves in disgust upon hearing rumors among the faculty that she abandoned her son during her recent disappearance.

Josh Bennett runs into Tyler in town and invites him to a tour of the historic Matheson Meeting House. There, he realizes the British redcoat uniform matches the attire of the intruders on the night of Duncan's wedding. Later, when visiting the Matheson Police Department, he discovers that Kinsey lied about reporting the break-in to the police. He confronts her over this, and Kinsey comes away feeling that the emotional rift between her and her brother has widened. Meanwhile, Captain Frederick Gideon and his lackeys Bolton and Coffey raid the town's public library to recover the weapons they used in the eighteenth century.

Bode finds the Timeshift Key among Nina's belongings, but not knowing how to operate the grandfather clock, he mistakenly returns to the day he was kidnapped by Dodge to coerce Duncan into making the Demon Key. Confident that his actions will not change the past, he taunts Dodge, but Duncan tells him he is still in danger and needs to run. The demon chases Bode and grabs onto him just as time runs out, inadvertently following him to the present day. He watches an hourglass mechanism upturn itself in the grandfather clock before the chase resumes.

Bode attempts to trap Dodge as a Keyhouse ghost, only for her to force him through the Ghost Door. She then jumps into Bode's body and closes the door, leaving Bode stranded without a body.

Trivia[]

For allusions made in this episode, click here.
  • Eden Hawkins' body is found by Kinsey and thrown off of the seaside cliffs near Keyhouse by the Savinis, similar to what the Keepers of the Keys did after Dodge killed their friends.
  • Tyler impresses Josh with his historical knowledge of Matheson during the American Revolution and confesses that facts about that time period simply pop into his head. This is likely because of the book on Matheson's history he put into his head using the Head Key in The Keepers of the Keys in the first season.
    • However, this contradicts a plot point in The Head and the Heart in the second season when Jackie Veda forgets her summer reading even after it was put into her head in using the same key.
  • The lone case file appearing in the Matheson Police Department's records under the name "Lesser" refers to Sam Lesser and Dodge's invasion of Keyhouse during the events of Dissection in the first season.
