The Demon Key is one of the keys.
Two versions of this Key were forged, with each holding a different function. The first was created by Dodge, but failed to fulfill the intention of the key, and therefore it failed to perform its intended purpose. The second was created by Duncan Locke under coercion, which succeeded in its intended function.
History[]
Creation[]
Dodge tried to create the key twice, in the first using Whispering Iron collected from the Drowning Caves. However, because Dodge was not a Locke, it did not fulfill its objective, instead causing people to melt and die until only bones were left.[1] Dodge tried again, but the advice Dodge received from Chamberlin Locke sabotaged the attempt.[2] Finally, after learning Duncan had forged a key and had his memories restored, Dodge abducted Duncan and Bode and used Bode as leverage to force Duncan into successfully forging the key desired.[3]
Revolution[]
The key was first used on Javi. Dodge proceeded to transform a small group of people as her vanguard.[4] During the final battle between the Lockes and these new demons, Duncan, Tyler and Scot broke into the vault containing the Demon Key while Kinsey held off Dodge. Duncan discovered that as the creator of the Demon Key, he could control the demons that it summoned and turned them against Dodge. Tyler killed Dodge with the Alpha Key and the Lockes escaped from her crumbling house with the Demon Key in their possession.[5]
When the Lockes tossed all of the keys into Frederick Gideon's portal, Tyler tossed in the Demon Key.[6]
Uses[]
This key was crafted with the intent of having a person be possessed by a demon, in the same manner as they would with demons that emerge from the Black Door
Due to the nature of its creation, the first version of the Demon Key, when inserted into someone, caused them to dissolve into a pile of black liquid and bones, rather than its intended effect.[1]
The perfected version of the Demon Key, when held against the spine of a person, will cause a lock to appear. Upon being inserted, the victim becomes possessed by a demon.[3] How the key summons the demon or whether it even creates a completely new demon that has never lived in the demon world before is unclear, although people possessed by the Demon Key will listen to the user of the Demon Key at the time of the demon's possession and do as the latter say, controlling the former and the demon will carry out the spoken imperatives of the key-user, even to the point of self-inflicted harm;[3][4][7] however, this dominion is easily superseded by the one who actually made the key which, in the Demon Key's case, is Duncan Locke whose blood was used in its forging. This was seen when it was realized that Duncan holds greater sway over Dodge's demonic minions, such that Dodge had to physically battle them after Duncan sicced them on her, since simply telling those demons to stand down was not an option.[5]
