Cliffhanger is the tenth and final episode of the second season of Locke & Key. It aired on October 22, 2021.
Summary[]
Escalating threats and a devastating loss lead the Lockes into a ferocious showdown with Dodge. Back at Keyhouse, Bode confronts a shocking visitor.
Plot[]
While Bode and Kinsey Locke discuss why Josh Bennett and Eden Hawkins went to the Black Door, Daniel Mutuku shows up to intimidate them, having come to Keyhouse with Nina Locke. A shaken Tyler Locke returns home, revealing to his sister that the Alpha Key kills both demons and their hosts, and brushes off his mother's attempts to sympathize in light of his girlfriend's death.
The next day, Josh Bennett disposes multiple historical documents out of shame for being associated with his ruthless and cruel ancestor Captain Frederick Gideon. Eden attempts to persuade him to get the Omega Key for her, but she is chased away.

At Gabe's cliffside base, he briefs his army on their imminent invasion on Keyhouse to kill Nina, and forbids them from harming Kinsey. Kinsey herself shows up at the base to talk to Gabe, drawing attention away from the vault where the Demon Key is kept so Tyler, Duncan Locke, and Scot Cavendish can sneak in. Kinsey accuses Gabe of not truly loving her, as he claims, only wanting to control her, and throws herself off the cliff, using the Angel Key and harness to take flight. The demons see through the decoy and Kinsey takes the Crown of Shadows from Gabe before he can use it on her friends.
Duncan slowly burns his way into the vault with the Matchstick Key as Tyler and Scot play defense, using the Alpha and Hercules Keys to subdue the demons that come their way. Gabe uses the Identity Key to take on his Dodge (tall, dark-haired woman) persona and leads the assault on the heroes. Yelling at the demons to stop attacking, Duncan realizes that, as the maker of the Demon Key, his own orders to the demons under its influence supersede Dodge's. He has them distract Dodge as he opens a hole in the vault and claims ownership of the Demon Key. While the three heroes escape, Dodge, enraged by the several turns against her, uses the Plant Key to ravage the base with vines. They flee the collapsing house, but Tyler goes back to check on Kinsey, who flies in to face Dodge alone.
She loses the Crown of Shadows to Dodge and gets restrained by the Chain Key, but Tyler arrives in the nick of time to stab Dodge with the Alpha Key, and the two siblings barely escape the collapsing house. Lucas Caravaggio climbs out of the wreckage, his soul now free of Dodge, having survived the Alpha Key's fatal effects due to being an Echo. He says he was lying dormant in his own body, forced to watch as Dodge wrought havoc, and gives his keys back to the Lockes.
During the battle, a newly returned Ellie Whedon (with Dodge's appearance) visits Keyhouse, and Bode confirms her identity as Ellie. When the others return victorious, Ellie is given the Identity key to return to her normal appearance, and tearfully reunites with Lucas. She later has a similarly emotional reunion with her son Rufus Whedon in Nebraska.
A week later, Josh Bennett visits Nina Locke to apologize to her for brushing off her advice to not get lost in his grief over his wife's death. He tries to schedule a dinner date in the near future, but Nina asks for more time to sort out her own feelings of being alienated from her children. Tyler deletes the video he and Jackie Veda recorded to remind her of magic, and receives Duncan's Pontiac GTO as a gift. He apologizes to Nina for rejecting her sympathy after Jackie's death, and entrusts the Omega, Alpha, and Demon Keys to Kinsey. He reveals that he does not intend to use the Memory Key to preserve his memories of magic, and leaves Matheson to travel.
The Savini Squad throw Scot a going-away party before he leaves for college in England. At the party, Kinsey and Scot share a kiss.. Seeing his mother's glum mood, Bode has her use the Head Key on herself to relive some of her best memories with Rendell Locke. When she voices her reluctance to forget about the positive experience, Bode shows her the Memory Key (whether he uses it on her is unknown).
Meanwhile, Eden steals the Echo Key from Gabe's unoccupied dorm room, and summons the Echo of Captain Frederick Gideon at Keyhouse's wellhouse. She seems to be familiar with the demon that possessed Gideon, and tells him he is indebted to her for bringing him back. Tasking him with opening the portal to the demon dimensio again, Eden uses the Anywhere Key to let Gideon escape. In response, he throws her headfirst down the well and leaves the wellhouse with the Anywhere Key.

Trivia[]
- After Dodge's death, the Lockes regain several of the Keys that were taken from them, including the Plant, Identity, and the Ghost Keys. However, the ultimate fate of the Echo Key is unknown after Eden Hawkins uses it to summon the Echo of Captain Frederick Gideon. Gideon ends up with the Anywhere Key. The Crown of Shadows, the Great Lock, and the Chain and Shadow Keys presumably fall into the ocean alongside Dodge's house. The Demon Key is stolen from Dodge by Duncan and is also in the Lockes' possession.
- This episode marks the first appearance of the real Lucas Caravaggio in the present day. It's revealed that Lucas was trapped inside of his own body this entire time and had in fact been summoned as an Echo along with Dodge by Ellie. He is freed by Tyler with the Alpha Key.
- Kinsey is given the Alpha, Head, and Memory Keys by Tyler. Bode is later shown to be in possession of the latter two keys.
- Bode is implied to use the Memory Key on Nina, allowing her to remember magic.
