Chamberlin Locke is a recurring character of Netflix Locke & Key series. He's the great great grandfather of Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode Locke.
Biography[]
Fraternizing with his descendants[]
Little is known about Chamberlin's history other than that he became a ghost after his mysterious death which occurred prior to the twentieth century, and that Rendell and Duncan would often use the Ghost Key in their primes, and the three had many conversations. Apparently contented, albeit lonely, in his ways, he is quite pleased when he is eventually visited by Bode, who promises to return.[1] He was also the one to teach his descendants how to make their own keys, although only Duncan proved to be capable of it. Duncan thinks that it was something that Chamberlin came to regret.[2][3]
Altercation with Dodge[]
In order to learn how to create his own key, Gabe visits Chamberlin using the Ghost Key. Gabe gets Chamberlin to reveal that to imbue a new key with its power, the key maker must focus their whole mind, visualizing precisely what they want the key to do. He must also add a drop of his own fresh cut blood and will then have a key that does exactly what he wants it to do.[4]
Gabe eventually learns that Chamberlin had lied to him and visits the ghost again to confront him. Chamberlin reveals that he had always known that Gabe was a demon and taunts him, buying time for Sam Lesser to try to seize Gabe's body. However, the plan fails and Sam is ejected again.[5]
When Gabe forces Duncan to make the Demon Key for him, it's revealed that Chamberlin had mostly told him the truth about the process and had only excluded that the blood used in making the key had to be Locke blood.[6]
While helping Tyler to craft the Alpha Key, Duncan reveals that Chamberlin had taught him and Rendell the process, although Duncan thinks that Chamberlin grew to regret it. At the same time, a ghost leads Kinsey and Scot to the Angel Key with the two believing that it is most likely Chamberlin who they are unable to communicate directly with due to no longer having the Ghost Key. Once they get the key, its revealed that it was actually the ghost of Sam Lesser, not Chamberlin, that led them to the key. Chamberlin apologizes for getting the credit instead of Sam, but Sam reassures him that he's fine with it and is just glad that it worked.[3]
Helping Bode[]
After Bode is trapped as a ghost by a time-displaced Dodge and then has his body erased by the effects of the Timeshift Key, Bode turns to Chamberlin for help. Sam reveals himself and offers his help instead, but he is angrily rejected by Bode. Watching this interaction, Chamberlin tells Bode that although he would never defend the things that Sam did, Sam has sought to atone for his actions and has even helped the Locke family out, although they never knew it. Bode is confused by this and Chamberlin urges Bode to talk to Sam to find out what he means.[7]
Trivia[]
- It is unknown what, if any, keys Chamberlin made. However, at the very least, he knew how to make one and passed the knowledge along to his descendants.
