The Chain Key is one of the Keys created by Harland Locke.

History[]

The key was used to control The Great Lock, which serves as the guardian of the catacombs under Keyhouse.[1] At one point, a group of criminals called the Brougham Brothers broke into Keyhouse Manor through eavesdropping on John Locke, where they stumbled into the Great Lock, which incapacitated them and left them for Chamberlin Locke to interrogate.[1][2]

In 1915, Chamberlin used the key to lock the Vault of Shadows with some of the most powerful keys inside, to protect them from being used in World War I.[2]

On February 11, 2012, Dodge used the Great Lock to attack the Locke children who were able to neutralize it with the Chain Key.[3]

Netflix Series[]

The Chain Key appears in the series' second season, albeit downsized to that of a normal key. Duncan and Bode find the Chain Key inside an Alice in Chains cassette tape. Duncan, despite having had his memories returned, does not recognize the key. He mentions this to Erin, and Erin, out of guilt, lies that she does not remember the key either. After she recovers the Great Lock from the basement, Erin goes to the winter festival and into the maze where Gabe is. Erin inserts the key into the Great Lock and binds Dodge in chains, but before she can defeat the demon, Eden Hawkins knocks her down and disables the Great Lock. Eden then takes the Chain Key and the Great Lock for herself.[4]

Uses[]

The Chain Key activates the Great Lock, which can release a cascade of chains to trap intruders.[3][2]

Guide to the Known Keys entry[]

"Something troublesome has happened. The Brougham Boys broke into the house this Sunday morning, while we were at church, and while attempting to enter the catacombs, triggered the Great Lock. I sorted them out with the Head Key, but I fear this is only the prelude to some new threat. The damnable thing is that they were sent with orders to break into the wine cellar, although they had no idea what they would find when they forced their way in. Someone must have some idea what I keep there, though, and someone is after it..."

Trivia[]

  • The Chain Key is one of the more larger-sized Keys measuring at about three feet in length and weighing a few pounds.[5]
  • The official Skelton Crew Studios replica of the Chain Key was downsized.[6] The reason behind this was because it was determined that it would be too expensive to create and mail a life-sized replica.
    • Israel Skelton stated via Twitter that only 1 life-sized replica of the Chain Key was made. It was kept as a prototype by Skelton Crew Studios.[7]
