Best Laid Plans is the seventh episode of the second season of Locke & Key. It aired on October 22, 2021.
Summary[]
Kinsey puts her acting skills to the test when the Lockes and their friends set a magical trap at Keyhouse. Josh fumes over his missing artifact.
Plot[]
Duncan Locke and his niece and nephews burn Erin Voss' belongings in lieu of a funeral. Later, Duncan lies to Nina Locke about Erin's whereabouts, saying she left for greener pastures without warning. Scot Cavendish visits Keyhouse to help the others set up a trap for Gabe and Eden Hawkins. They plan to force Gabe back into the wellhouse, which will destroy him due to his status as an Echo.
Meanwhile, in the Matheson Academy dorm, Gabe refuses to believe the Lockes are on to them, and Eden accuses him of developing true feelings for Kinsey. Pursuing the anonymous tip as to the theft of his historical artifact, Josh Bennett confronts Brinker Martin, only to discover the tip was a prank by Javi. Josh reveals to Nina his reasons for wanting the artifact back: it belonged to his ancestor Captain Frederick Gideon, to whom the portal to the demon world first opened in the 18th century. Gideon recorded his experiences with the portal in a journal, and Josh hopes to use the artifact (actually a piece of Whispering Iron, unbeknownst to him) to locate the portal to the supernatural world and somehow reconnect with his dead wife. Drawing from personal experience, Nina warns him not to lose himself in his grief, but Josh admits he is not ready to move on.
At Keyhouse, Kinsey confesses her feelings to Scot and they share a kiss shortly before Gabe and Eden arrive. Under the pretense of shooting for the sequel to The Splattering, Scot and the Lockes separate Gabe and Eden. While Eden is in the kitchen, Jamie Bennett traps her in a glass using the Small World Key and the dollhouse. Distracting Gabe with an intimate moment, Kinsey activates the Hercules belt and key while her brother opens a doorway to the wellhouse with the Anywhere Key, but a bird coming through from the wellhouse gives away the trap. Regardless, Scot, Tyler, and a powered-up Kinsey almost manage to force Gabe past the threshold before he fends them off with the Chain Key and the Great Lock.
Josh Bennett forces Jamie to stop playing with the dollhouse and confiscates the Small World Key, freeing Eden in the process. Gabe takes Bode and Duncan hostage, escaping to his cabin with the Anywhere Key after betraying Eden and stranding her at Keyhouse. The remaining three chase Eden away and find the cabin's address among her belongings. With Bode's safety at stake, Duncan forges a new key for Gabe, who uses it to bind a demon to Javi's soul and compel him to follow his orders without question. Scot, Kinsey, and Tyler arrive to help Duncan and Bode escape from the new demon.
The episode ends with Gabe heading off alongside Javi to assemble an army of demons.

Trivia[]
- Bode flipping Eden off while saying Aloha! is a callback to the pilot, where his uncle tries to pass off the gesture as a greeting.
- The title of the episode is a reference to the passage The best laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft a-gley in Robert Burns' poem To A Mouse.
- The passage means that even the most carefully prepared plans can go awry, which summarizes the heroes' experiences in this episode.
