Benjamin Locke is an ancestor of Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode, and the creator of the original Keys.
History[]
Benjamin was born in 1757, as one of three children in the Locke generation.[1][2]
Sometime around 1775, Benjamin's family started forging artillery for the American Minutemen and allowed a militia led by Adam Crais to hide inside the Drowning Caves near the family home. Ben's brother, Joshua, was among them.[2]
On January 13, 1775, Ben's parents were hanged for assisting the Minutemen.[3] The British occupied Keyhouse Manor as a base for the soldiers, while Ben and his older sister, Miranda, were forced to live in the Wellhouse. The next day, the siblings traveled to the Drowning Caves where Joshua and the militia were to bring news of their parents' passing, only to learn that Joshua was among many soldiers murdered by Harm Timmerman after the latter discovered a strange door filled with eldritch beings. Crais and another soldier, Fredricks, brought Ben and Miranda to Harm. While Miranda interrogated Harm, Benjamin caught sight of the remains of the demons congealed into iron, failing to notice Harm's brother opening the door and causing a demon to possess him. He then lunged at Ben with his rifle, but Crais shot and killed the brother before he could kill Ben, while Harm was killed by the dying Fredricks. Being witness to the horrors that lurked beyond the Black Door, Ben resolved to keep the Door closed to honor his family's legacy and protect Massachusetts.
Eventually, Ben affixed a crude padlock to the door with chains. He, Miranda, and Adam then spent the night in the caves to keep watch on the door. As he was sleeping, Ben was awoken by the whispers that were coming from the iron he collected earlier and listened to the sounds. The Black Door opened again when Ben's goat was drawn to it, breaking the padlock. Adam killed the goat and the door closed once more, although Ben, inspired by the whispers, had the idea to try again with the mysterious iron to make a lock. Ben spent all night in the foundry working to craft the metal into a new padlock, and with it, Ben crafted the first key: the Omega Key.[2]
Throughout the American Revolution, Ben collected more Whispering Iron in the Drowning Caves and crafted various keys to aid the American soldiers. He created the Anywhere Key and Ghost Key for intelligence gathering, the Gender Key and Head Key for Miranda to pass as a male soldier and learn how to fight and kill, and the Shadow Key and its crown for defense. He also crafted the Echo Key, which enabled him to communicate with Joshua. After Miranda was injured while fighting, Benjamin, using the Giant Key, slaughtered a squadron of British soldiers in retaliation. He then received the idea to craft the Mending Key alongside the Mending Cabinet and healed Miranda.[1]
At some point, Benjamin modified the Omega padlock as a permanent part of the Door for greater safety.[4]
He died sometime in 1799.[1]
