Adam Crais (May 18, 1736 – July 4, 1780) was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. He was aided by the Locke siblings Joshua, Benjamin, and Miranda.

History[]

In 1775, Crais and his militia made camp in the Drowning Caves to hide from British soldiers. It was there they found the Black Door, where the demons spilled out from it and possessed Harm Timmerman. Harm attacked the soldiers and killed some, including Joshua, until he was restrained by the others. After Joshua's siblings, Ben and Miranda, arrived looking for Joshua, Harm's brother was possessed and attacked the party with Harm, but Crais shot and killed the brother in self-defense. As the only ones to survive the deadly ordeal, Crais urged the Lockes to depart from Lovecraft and stay out of the war for their safety, but Ben and Miranda decided to help Crais's cause in order to protect Massachusetts from the demons of the Black Door.[1]

During the American Revolution, Crais and Miranda developed romantic feelings for one another. Miranda herself soon enlisted into Crais's militia to fight the British disguised as a man.[2] Before his death, Crais had apparently married into the Locke family, for his spirit was seen with the Lockes in the Moon Key's afterlife.[3]

His statue, with the inscription "The dreams and Ideas of Free Men are as an Army of Shadows, and as impossible to strike down..." [4][5] stands on the grounds of Lovecraft Academy.
